The structure of a butterfly valve
A butterfly valve contains a pivoting metal disc mounted on a rod that is connected to an actuator located on the outside of the valve. The disc is designed to fit flush with the tube or pipe and allows for quick shut off if necessary. In the open, or parallel, position, the disc is turned a quarter past the original position. This will allow for materials to pass through the tube or pipe. When the valve is closed, turned perpendicular within the tube or pipe, it blocks all flow. Additionally, the valve may be partially opened to allow for an incremental flow.
