Installing a butterfly valves

2012-09-07

To install a butterfly valve, you first need to thoroughly clean all surfaces of the pipes or tubes as well as any gaskets and flanges that you will be working with. Wipe off the disc that is attached  to the rod on the valve and turn it to the closed position.

Next, place the valve flanges directly against the walls of the tube or pipe. You want to make sure that a tight seal is formed to prevent leakage. Slowly tighten the flanges once they are mounted to the tube or pipe in order to create plenty of tension. This allows the valve to properly open and close.

Gently slide the butterfly valve between the rims of that specific section of tube or pipe. Take care not to damage the gasket that acts as a seal for the valve and flanges. Match each bolt to its corresponding hole and then tighten them in a crisscrossing manner rather than in a circle. Finally, using the lever attached to the outside of the valve, open the butterfly valve to make sure that there is adequate space for it to move within the tube or pipe.

Be sure to follow safety precautions when installing a butterfly valve. Do not exceed the pressure or temperature rating limits, and only use the valve for its specified applications.

Butterfly valves can be purchased in a variety of shapes and sizes with varying pressure ratings. A spring return butterfly valve is most useful in automated applications, such as heating, air conditioning, and ventilating. Actuated butterfly valve control the flow of gas or liquid using two semicircular plates that are hinged on a spindle. It only allows the liquid or gas to flow in one direction. Two other common butterfly valves are manual and double acting.

Butterfly valves are extremely useful and common due being more lightweight and less expensive than other types of valves. They are useful in both commercial and residential settings and are made of durable materials, such as aluminum, steel, stainless steel, PVC, or CPVC.
