different styles of butterfly valves
Butterfly valves are available in different styles, such as high-performance and eccentric valves. Butterfly valves can be found on fire apparatus and large lines, such as tank to pump lines and rear and front suctions.
The design of the butterfly valve does give it a disadvantage, because unlike an electric ball valve, a portion of the disc will always be in contact with the liquid, regardless of whether it is in the open or closed position, and this causes a constant pressure switch regardless of the setting. Viscous or thick liquids also may slow the disc’s functional movement.
Though butterfly valves may be configured for electronic or manual operation, the most rapid is pneumatic control. The gearbox must receive a signal to both open and close an electric ball valve. However, an advantage to pneumatic operation lies in its flexibility, for it permits either double or single actuation. Single actuation requires a fail-safe, so that in the event of power loss, on a spring-loaded system, the valve will change to the closed position if open. So, a signal must be sent to open the valve initially. Double actuation valves need signals to both open and close the mechanism, because they are not spring-loaded.
