butterfly valve and ball valve

2012-06-28

Butterfly Valves are devices used for flow control, usually the flow of a fluid through a section of pipe. The butterfly valve operates similarly to an electric ball valve. A flat disc located at the pipe’s center has a rod running through it that connects to the actuator on the exterior of the valve. Turning the actuator rotates the plate to a position either perpendicular or parallel to the flow. The flow may be regulated more specifically through different disc rotations.

The “butterfly” is the metal disc mounted on the rod. When the Butterfly Valve is in the closed position, the disc is rotated to a position in which it totally blocks the passage of liquid. When the valve is open fully, the disc has been rotated one-quarter turn—90 degrees—allowing for nearly unrestricted passage. Flow may be incrementally regulated by various positions of the valve. This advantageous feature of Butterfly Valves makes them ideal for many industrial uses. The size of butterfly valves is one more of their advantages. Since they are lighter and smaller than other valve forms, they do not necessitate the large degree of supporting structure required for other valves, such as the electric Ball Valve.
