Advantages and disadvantages of butterfly valves

2012-08-10

A butterfly valve consists of a metal disc within the main section of the valve itself and this is placed to be in an upright position to the flow when it is closed. When the valve is opened, the disc rotates for a quarter turn and becomes parallel to the flow allowing the liquid to pass through it. Specific flow regulation is achieved by the use of further rotations to the disc, and this makes the precise nature of butterfly valves particularly advantageous for various industrial usages.

Other advantages to using butterfly valves can be seen in their size, as they are smaller and lighter than other forms of valve, and they do not require as much supporting structure as, for example, an electric ball valve

There is a disadvantage to using butterfly valves in that the design means a segment of the disc must always be touched by the flow of liquid whether the valve is open or closed, and this will result in there always being a pressure switch no matter the setting. Thick or viscous liquids may also impede the operational movement of the disc.

Pneumatic control is the most rapid, although butterfly valves can also be configured for manual and for electronic operation. A signal must be sent to the gearbox for both opening and closing of an electronically operated valve, but one of the advantages of pneumatic operation is more flexible as it allows for single or double actuation. A fail-safe is required for single actuation so that if power should be lost the valve will move into the closed position from an open one on a spring-loaded system. This means that a signal is required for initially opening the valve. Double actuation valves are not spring-loaded and therefore need a signal to be sent for both opening and closing the mechanism.
